Balance

"Hoof balance is a vague term used by veterinarians and farriers to descrive the theorectical ideal conformation of the foot and the position of the hoof relative to the limb.  The term hoof balance was seldom used in early farrier texts.. it has no inherent meaning".

In Applied Equine Podiatry the principal concept of balance is of balancing between the structures in addition to dimensional balance.

It is an attempt to seek to provide the correct pressures to each structure in order to promote healthy growth.

Once correct balance is obtained, regular visits from Applied Equine Podiatrists will maintain this balance as structures develop.

These pictures show primarily a dorsal palmar imbalance.  (amongst other imbalances too)

Balance must be restored gradually to the foot in order to avoid undue stresses on tendons and ligaments.

Once correct balance is achieved, the horse has the innate ability to heal itself.

Correct balance over all dimensions is required in order to facilitate healthy rehabilitation of the foot structures.
